ALLAN BEVAN, CANADIAN COMPOSER
Performances during the 2023-2024 concert season
Thank you, In Mulieribus
Portland's premier treble voice ensemble, In Mulieribus, Dr. Anna Song, director, shares their wonderful performance of my treble voice arrangement of The Huron Carol. The ensemble performed the work twice in their winter concerts in December 2023.
The Huron Carol, Canada's oldest Christmas carol was written originally in the Algonquian language of the Hurons by Fr. Jean de Brebeuf. Brefeuf, a Jesuit priest, came to Quebec in the 16th century, where he set the word to French carol melody known as Une Jeune Pucelle. In the early 60s Jesse Middleton, a Toronto journalist, translated an earlier French version into English. In the mid-1990s, I set the English words for SATB. Approximately ten years later, I made this SSAA version at the request of Dr. Melanie Turgeon (Edmonton) for her Heruvymy Ukrainian Female Quartet. The treble voices version was published in 2011 by classica Music Publishers of Vancouver. Copies of the work are now available directly through me since the publisher closed in 2018.
