Allan Bevan (b. 1951, Toronto, Canada) is
a graduate of the School of Music, the University of Windsor,
and holds a Mmus degree in Choral Conducting from the University
of Alberta and a PhD in Composition from the University
of Calgary. His composition teachers and mentors include
Istvan Anhalt, Howard Bashaw, Allan Bell, Clifford Crawley,
David Eagle, Malcolm Forsyth, David Keane, Paul McIntyre,
and William Jordan.
His choral music has won awards in many national and international
choral composition events including the 2002 Ruth Watson
Henderson Choral Composition Competition, sponsored by Choirs
Ontario. He is a three-time winner in the Association
of Canadian Choral Conductors' Composition Competition (1999,
2001, 2003). His To Morning, a recent composition
for string orchestra was awarded the Member’s Prize
in the 2006 Mozart-250 competition sponsored by Chamber
Orchestra Kremlin of Moscow. Dr. Bevan’s Passion Oratorio
Nou Goth Sonne Under Wode was selected as the Outstanding
Choral Work by The Association of Canadian Choral Conductors
at their 2008 convention.
Dr. Bevan has been commissioned by some of Canada's finest
choirs, including Pro Coro Canada, The Vancouver Chamber
Choir, I Coristi, Da Camera Singers, Cantare Children's
Choir, Mount Royal Kantorei, and The Alberta Centennial
Choral Celebration.
His choral music is represented by publishers in the U.S.,
Canada, and Europe. His music is broadcast regularly on
the CBC radio network.
Allan Bevan has been described as “an extremely talented
composer of ravishing sacred choral music” by The
American Organist and as a “composer [who] obviously
understands and is able to write for the voice in an uncanny
fashion” by The Choral Room.
